Perspektivwechsel

How can God allow this to happen??

According to United Nations statistics1, one in eleven people on Earth suffers from chronic hunger. This means they do not get enough food to survive in the long term. One in eleven people wakes up hungry in the morning and will go to sleep hungry at night—without ever having the chance to eat their fill.

Then there are the wars in Israel, the Gaza Strip, Ukraine, and many other countries around the world—with all the suffering these conflicts bring to the people.

Current Wars Around the World (Jan. 2024)

Ending world hunger and putting an end to wars is a task of almost unimaginable magnitude. At the same time, there are many other challenges that seem just as insurmountable: nature is increasingly losing its balance; right-wing or fascist ideologies are gaining popularity in more and more countries. The number of dictatorships is rising, and human rights are becoming increasingly difficult to defend. Furthermore, some regimes use available food supplies as a political lever. Large quantities of food are destroyed in order to exert pressure on other countries by exploiting the suffering of those starving.

That’s the situation we’re living in. We see it every day on the news.

This really bothers me. It can’t be that the world is going to the dogs and that there’s no solution from God. After all, we Christians believe in a God whom the Bible says is love. But if that’s true, how can He allow so much suffering?

This question is not new. People have been grappling with it since ancient times2. It is the question of the justice of God or the justification of God: How can a God whom we describe as good allow suffering in the world?3 Philosophers and theologians have repeatedly tried, in vain, to find a satisfactory answer. Karl Barth, described by some as the most important theologian of the 20th century, came to the conclusion that there is no solution to this problem.

Even Jesus could not find an answer to this question. In the end, he was all alone, forsaken by his God.

Abandoned by God? Perhaps our theology tells us that this cannot be. But Jesus, at least, felt that way. His last words before his death were:

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mk 15: 34; NIV)

To put it another way

So the question of why God allows all this suffering remains unanswered. But I find myself wondering more and more often: Could it be that we’re asking the question the wrong way? That it’s simply not the right question?

If God is love: Does God perhaps ask us, “Why do you allow this to happen?”

Why is cheap natural gas from Russia or oil from Arab countries more important to you than human lives?

Why is your prosperity more important to you than people who are starving?

How can you not care that in poor countries, seven-year-old children have to toil in mines so there will be enough raw materials for your cell phones?4

Perhaps God says:

I have given you everything so that you may all have a life worth living.

Why don’t you use it, but instead hoard it and spend it on yourselves?

Could it be that God sees the situation in Israel, in Ukraine, and throughout the world in a completely different way than we do?

If God is love, it must break His heart to see His children tormenting one another.

If He is love, it must cause Him infinite pain to see that we allow all of this to happen.

I think the question isn’t, “How can God allow this to happen?” but rather, “How can we allow this to happen?” And, “What can we do differently? What can we do to combat suffering in the world?”

But what should we do?

Perhaps it’s a start to ask very specifically: “What can I do today? Where do I have the opportunity today to take even the smallest step toward peace?”

Even the greatest misfortune and suffering had, at some point, a very small beginning.

A wrong word, an insensitive reaction, a selfish decision. Even the hatred between peoples arose long ago from a tiny seed. Over generations, this plant then grew until it had stifled all respect for others and all compassion.

That’s discouraging. How can we change structures that have developed over such a long period of time?

But perhaps the beginning of major conflicts also points us toward their resolution.

If a tiny impulse can lead to insurmountable conflicts—why shouldn’t the small impulse we set in motion when talking to our neighbor have the same impact? The small act of kindness with which we greet a homeless person? The extra minutes we give a child to answer their questions?

Perhaps all of this is like a stone we throw into the water. No matter how small it is, it creates ripples that are so much larger than itself. We shouldn’t underestimate the small things we can do.

Every person has the power to make a difference. And it’s up to each of us to decide which direction we steer that influence.

Food for thought:

Can I think of someone I can do something nice for today?

Is there anyone in my life who is alone, who is being treated unfairly, or who doesn’t have enough to live on?

Where do I see discord? Can I promote peace?

If these questions have given you an idea, hold on to that thought. Follow your intuition. Throw your little pebble into the water.

And then trust in God.

Perspektivwechsel

Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen? (Mk. 15, 34; NG)

Anders gefragt

So bleibt die Frage also unbeantwortet, warum Gott all das Leid zulässt.

Aber was tun?

Folge deiner Intuition. Wirf deinen kleinen Stein ins Wasser.

Und dann vertraue auf Gott.

Beyond Perfection

A few years ago, I first heard about the Japanese art of kintsugi. In this art form, broken clay vessels such as cups, bowls, or jugs are not thrown away, but are repaired in a remarkable way and transformed into valuable, elegant objects.

Normally, we tend to throw away a broken vessel because it has lost its value and usefulness to us. Hardly anyone will go to the trouble of buying glue and piecing the shards back together. Who wants to have cups with glued-on handles in their cupboard? Even with the most careful work, the damage will always remain visible.

Kintsugi takes a different approach. Instead of using an invisible adhesive, the artist uses a golden paste. The cracks are emphasized rather than hidden. The vessel’s history is revealed. Indeed: its unfortunate history becomes the foundation of its value.

I see parallels here with the way Jesus treated people who weren’t flawless or perfect. At the beginning of his ministry, in his inaugural address, he says:

The Spirit of God has sent me to heal the brokenhearted and to set the captives free. (based on Luke 4:18–19)

In saying this, Jesus is referring to texts that were written centuries before his time. Time and again, we find images of God in the ancient scriptures that remind me of kintsugi artists. For example:

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Ps. 34, 18; NIV)

3 He heals the broken-hearted. (Ps. 147, 3 a; NIV)

Jesus embodied these words throughout his life. He saw his mission as freeing and healing broken people. He saw those who lived on the margins of society: the despised, the outcasts—the broken.

Jesus saw the cracks and wounds in their lives. But unlike everyone else, he did not condemn these people. He began right there, healed them, absolved them of guilt, and restored their dignity. He did not join in the blame game—quite the opposite. Before he healed a blind man—whose blindness had everyone wondering what sin it was a punishment for—Jesus said:

‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. (John 9, 3)

Jesus wasn’t looking for someone to blame. He didn’t need a scapegoat. Instead, he healed people.

When we treat people who are broken in this way, it reflects how Jesus lived. He restores people, not by simply making their brokenness disappear. He puts the pieces back together through love, care, and the glory of God. Through this “golden glue,” what was broken becomes something much greater that reveals God’s glory without denying the past.

Food for thought:

Do I see mostly what is broken in my life? Do my thoughts revolve around losses and disappointments?

Can I perhaps discover God’s action—His protection, His healing—in my struggles?

Do I recognize the eternal value that God has given me by integrating these fractures into my new self, which is permeated by God’s healing touch?

And what about other people? Do I notice, above all, their weaknesses, their failures, their imperfections?

Or can I also see in their lives that they are filled with signs of God?

Am I a disciple of Jesus?

This is the last part of a four part post.

Starting with the “Great Commission,” we have looked in [past] [posts] at what Jesus is actually about in this commission to his followers. He says:

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt 28:19-20; NIV)

They are to make other people disciples of Jesus just as they are His disciples. [Jesus’ central concern], then, is that his followers truly be his disciples and that they train others to be disciples.

But what is a disciple? At the time of Jesus, it was someone who dropped everything to follow a master, to live with him, 24 hours a day, every day. His goal was to learn as much as possible from him, to imitate him even in little things. For this, he left behind his whole life: everything he had built, his business, his family.

The focus of a disciple, his attention, was completely on his Master. Jesus taught his followers by sharing his whole life with them. He traveled with his disciples, he ate with them, and he lived with them. 24 hours a day, the disciples learned to consciously imitate their Master.

So being a disciple was something incredibly radical. And Jesus gives his disciples in the “Great Commission” the order to pass on this way of life to other people, to make them his disciples as well.

But it is precisely this radicalism that frightens me. Some time ago, during an evening of prayer in my church, I put it this way: “Am I really a disciple of Jesus?”

Yes: I am a Christian. I grew up in a good Christian home. At home, we prayed together regularly, went to church as a family every Sunday. Afterward, my father read to us children from the children’s Bible. I am very grateful for this time. In my youth, I came into contact with free church groups, and in one service I explicitly “gave my life to Jesus”, as we called it.

The logical consequence for me was to study theology. I found a church, was soon allowed to preach there, was called to the teaching ministry, and finally to the church leadership, where I served for over 20 years.

So, why then can I raise the question of whether I am really a disciple of Jesus?

Of course, I have learned a lot in all these years. But it was very different for the first followers of Jesus. Just the decision to leave everything to learn, to learn intensively, is miles away from my life.

What did it mean to be Jesus’ disciple back then? The demand was great:

They wanted to live their lives as if Jesus was living it.

And there was only one way to get there: to always be with Jesus, to observe him closely, and to incorporate his behaviors into their lives.

And that is exactly what I am missing. Of course, I have internalized certain traits of Jesus, and I try to make them the basis of my decisions. And so I also grow a bit over time. I certainly have traits of a disciple, too, in those areas where my behavior and convictions are shaped by Jesus. But what I lack is what the disciples did back then: the constant observation of Jesus. The unconditional will to become more and more like him. And that is exactly what makes a disciple. That I live my life as if Jesus were living it.

So I would call myself an enthusiastic follower of Jesus rather than a disciple. A very important difference.

How do I become a more consequent disciple?

So I asked myself: How then do I become a more consequential, more intentional disciple?

For the first disciples, it was much easier in one respect: They could observe Jesus, discuss with him, try out behaviors that they saw in him. And he could help them when they got stuck.

We do not have these opportunities today. But what we do have are some tools to become better disciples of Jesus. To grow in being disciples.

Three aids

The Gospels

First, we have the Gospels, where we can see how Jesus lived. After all, becoming a disciple means imitating the Master.

To do this, it is helpful to read the Gospels with concrete questions, for example:

How did Jesus approach people?

How did he talk to them?

How did he react to attacks?

What did he do when he met someone who was in trouble?

How did he tell people about his Father-God?

What did his practical life of faith look like?

What teachings have come down to us from him?

Even if we can no longer meet the man Jesus directly, we can try to live for ourselves what we discover of him in the Gospels.

How does that work in concrete terms? If you want to get serious: what can that look like? I’ll tell you how I do it, and how you can try it. This is only a suggestion; it is just the way that is most helpful for me.

Make a conscious decision to become a more consistent disciple of Jesus. It can help if you write this decision in your diary, for example. Or you might create a notebook or a document on your computer in which you record your experiences with being a disciple.

Take a gospel as a guide, a manual. Start at the beginning of a Gospel and read it slowly and carefully. Pay attention to every passage where you can see what Jesus was like, what he did and how, or what he taught.

As soon as you discover something like this, think: is this relevant to my life? Can I learn something from it? How can I implement this concretely in my everyday life? And then try it, for one or more days. Write down your experiences.

After this time, think about how you did. Do you need more practice? Is there anything you can improve? Or do you need help? Who can you talk to about this? Again, record this in your diary.

And then read on in your Gospel to the next passage where you can see what Jesus was like, what he did and how, or what he taught.

It’s not necessarily about experiencing the same things described in the Bible. It’s about finding out what being a disciple of Jesus means to you personally.

I believe that no one becomes a disciple in the sense of Jesus by chance. It takes a firm decision. I am also on the way right now. I started with my favorite gospel: the Gospel of Mark.

The Holy Spirit

The second help to grow as a disciple of Jesus is the Spirit of God. Jesus says:

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:26; NIV)

When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears […] He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. (Joh. 16, 13f; NIV)

Powerful, isn’t it? When you set out to become a more consistent disciple of Jesus, you are never alone. When you work with a gospel, the Holy Spirit is there to explain what is important for you. He will help you.

But he is also there in situations for which you will not find an example in the Bible. The more you come to understand what Jesus is like, the easier it will be for you to discover the quiet hints of the Holy Spirit in your everyday life.

Friends who are on the same path

We can also help each other. Talk in your small group about your questions, your big and small successes and failures. Pray for each other, listen together to what the Holy Spirit wants to emphasize right now.

These are some ways we can grow as disciples of Jesus.

Danger: Perfectionism

Maybe you would like to become more like Jesus. That’s what attracts you. But then you get scared. What about all the radical statements in the Bible? Doesn’t Jesus ask for much more than you can accomplish? What if he wants to send you to Mongolia?

Well: Jesus does not mince words. He makes radical demands. For example:

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. (Mark 8:34f; NIV)

So he’s all about unconditional loyalty. It doesn’t get more radical than that. Except perhaps with Paul:

[We all are to] reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Eph 4:13; NIV)

Have you ever read this before? The standard for your life could not be higher: It is not less than the Christ in all His fullness. Impossible, isn’t it?

But don’t be put off by this seemingly impossible claim. Let’s look at how Jesus trained his disciples: He gave them small tasks. They could try their hand at practical things: organizing events, for example, getting food for the people who were listening to Jesus. Or Jesus sent them to the neighboring villages to speak to others about the kingdom of God, about the love of the Father-God. And then they came together again, and Jesus gave them feedback.

Jesus never assumed that a disciple would be perfect. The standard, the goal is high. But Jesus works with what his followers can give.

A wonderful example is the final mission of the disciples: the Bible passage we read at the beginning, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” But do you know what comes immediately before this passage in the Bible?

the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. (Matt 28:16f; EÜ)

Jesus knew that his disciples were not perfect. Despite all they had experienced with him over the years, some were still not sure. But the great thing is that even though some, in our opinion, certainly do not meet the standard, even though they still doubt Jesus after all these years, Jesus still entrusts them with his life’s work.

There is no place for meritocracy in following Jesus, or for worrying about not being good enough. Although Jesus does not take back his high standard: He works with what we can give. He does not even rebuke his followers for their doubts.

Our challenges today are different from those of Jesus’ time. Maybe your everyday life is already too busy: with work, children, school, volunteer work. There is not much left. Maybe you can only give a little. But that is enough. And that is exactly what Jesus wants to use.

So I want to encourage you to become a more consistent disciple of Jesus. I have shown you one possible way to do this. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Be blessed!

All parts of this series:

[The Great Commission misunderstood]

Sei gesegnet!

Alle Teile dieser Serie:

[Der missverstandene Missionsbefehl]

What Jesus sends his followers out to do

This post is the third part of a multi-part post. In the past two months, I needed all of my time to prepare for a seminar. That’s why this post appears late.

In the [previous part], we dealt with what a disciple is, and why the general understanding of being a Christian does not have too much to do with being a disciple. Today, the question is what it really means: to be a disciple.

Doing what Jesus did

What exactly does Jesus want from his followers?

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:18-20; NIV)

What matters to Jesus is that we continue the work that he started. And that we do it the way he did it. That is, he made people his disciples, and that’s what he wants his followers to do, you and me. But how does he envision this?

Let’s take a closer look at our translation, especially the words go, baptize and teach. They have a special grammatical form in our text: they are participles.

Why is that important? Depending on the translation you use, it may look like Jesus is giving four instructions to his disciples: 1. go, 2. make disciples, 3. baptize, and 4. teach.

But if we look closely, there is only one explicit instruction: “make people my disciples “. Everything else (walking, baptizing, and teaching) are only the means to reach the goal Jesus has set.

Great Commission and Church

Have you ever noticed that Jesus almost never evangelized directly?

What did he do instead? His ministry had two directions:

By far the most time Jesus devoted to his disciples. He trained them very intensively. Thus, he worked inwardly, investing in the community of his followers.

To people outside this narrow circle, he showed what the kingdom of God is like. And he let them participate in it, took them into the blessing of the kingdom of God: Healing, forgiveness, being made whole. This part of his work he directed outward.

Today, we focus on the inward work. How can we live the mission of Jesus in our church, in the community of his followers?

Walking: This is less necessary within the congregation. We meet in worship, in small groups, or teams. So, this point does not need a strong emphasis in the church.

To baptize: The vast majority of people who feel they belong to a congregation already are baptized. For all others, there are more or less regular offers to be baptized. Therefore, this too isn’t the focus of our attention.

That leaves teaching. Here we could say: This is also not really relevant for us. After all, there is a sermon every Sunday in the church service. And whoever wants to, can additionally go to a cell group with more input. In addition, there are plenty of Christian books, magazines, and TV stations from which we can learn.

Nevertheless, as we shall see, the emphasis is clearly on teaching.

[…] make disciples, […] teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:18-20; NIV)

The ABC of being a Disciple

And here we come to a sore point probably of just about every congregation.

During my summer vacation, I visited a church in southern Germany. The preacher used an image that has stuck with me. He spoke of the Christian ABC topics and the XYZ topics.

ABC: These are the truly relevant topics, the foundations of our faith and life.

XYZ: These are the more or less unimportant things that we like to deal with.

We hear a lot of sermons about all kinds of things, and I think there are too many XYZ topics in them. That does not mean the sermon isn’t interesting. It also doesn’t mean you don’t get anything out of the sermon. It just means there are more important topics that would indeed help you on your way.

Some congregations focus on the so-called “end times.” The central theme of other communities is practicing spiritual gifts. Or every other Sunday, you hear that no Christian has to suffer: It is all about healing and prosperity. And in many congregations, it is common to have great arguments about the finer points of doctrine: Infant or adult baptism? Does the gift of tongues still exist that Paul writes about, or has it become superfluous?

All these are topics that refer (more or less justified) to the Bible. The problem is that they easily get too much weight, that they become our ABC topics.

But what would Jesus say are ABC subjects? What is it that he wants his followers to teach? He leaves no room for interpretation there: “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you.” It is all about what He taught.

Could it be that today’s evangelical and charismatic Christianity is more of a Pauline church than a Jesus church? Why? Because we often find it so much easier to discuss theological details instead of how to live Jesus-like. For example, how many sermons deal with issues we take from Paul’s letters? Or worse: with individual statements somewhere in the Bible, whose alleged meaning can only be understood when they are taken out of context and blown up to become central doctrines?

And in proportion, how many sermons focus on a specific word, instruction, or rule of life of Jesus?

What did Jesus teach?

“Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” What did Jesus command? What did he teach? There is the Sermon on the Mount, first of all. Then the many teachings he wrapped up in parables. And finally, the unspoken lessons we can learn by observing his life. There really is enough material for our sermons.

Perhaps we should spend much more time on what Jesus taught. In our private time with God, in the cell group, in the church service. That would certainly be valuable: for us personally, but also the external effect of the community of Jesus followers.

But even that is not enough. Jesus’ main interest is not that people get to know his teachings. Again, that would be too superficial. He does not say, “Make men my disciples, teaching them all that I have commanded you.” He says:

make disciples, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:18-20; NIV)

The task of the church, the cell group, and your private time with God is to learn to implement in your life what Jesus taught. It is not enough to know. Jesus is concerned that we begin to follow His teaching and His life by incorporating it so consistently into our daily lives, that we become more and more like Jesus.

And that’s what we do lack. That is what is sickening our communities.

I’d like to remind us of the quote by Justin Gravitt from the [previous post]:

[The word “Christian” is] now a term of belief more than behavior. It no longer indicates someone who looks and acts like Jesus but is more commonly used of someone who has intellectually accepted the tenets of Christianity. Instead of being recognized by their actions, today’s Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus as their personal Savior and who identifies with the Christian religion.

If we want to follow the “Great Commission,” we must get this right: to move away from a head religion to a heart-, hand- and foot-way of life that makes us recognizable as disciples of Jesus. That is the only thing that matters.

Jesus said:

Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matt. 7:21; NIV)

It is not enough to believe that Jesus is Lord, that is: our Master. It is not enough to know what Jesus taught. What matters is to live his teachings daily.

So, this is what the “Great Commission” is about: that we teach ourselves and one another to obey everything Jesus commanded us. That is what it means to become a disciple of Jesus: Little by little, step by step. That’s what it means to become His image. The more Jesus becomes recognizable in you and me, the more we can put into practice Jesus’ command to introduce others to our Master, our Teacher, our Savior.

In the next post, I will describe how I am trying to do this myself: to become a more consistent disciple of Jesus.

Until then. Be blessed!

Tun was Jesus tat

Was genau will Jesus von seinen Nachfolgern?

Wörtlich sagt Jesus hier also:

(Mt. 28, 18-20)

Dieser Punkt fällt also weitgehend weg.

Was hat Jesus gelehrt?

Was hat Jesus denn geboten?

Sei gesegnet!

Christian and Disciple

[This is the second part of a multi-part post.]

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mt. 28, 19-20; NIV)

In the [first part of this post series], I reported that I misunderstood the so-called “Great Commission” all my life. The result was a guilty conscience every time this Bible passage appeared anywhere. That changed only when I saw what Jesus really wants from his followers. He does not say, “Make people Christians”, but “Make people my disciples”.

Of course, the question immediately arises whether Christian and disciple are not the same. Well: at the time of the New Testament, it was. But the meaning of the word Christian has changed over the past two thousand years. So, let’s take a closer look at the words Christian and Disciple.

1.1 What is a disciple

What was a disciple at the time of Jesus? It is not what we today commonly understand by a Christian.

A disciple was much more than just a student or an apprentice. From the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus called disciples to follow him. Two examples:

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said […] At once they left their nets and followed him. (Mark 1:16-18; NIV)

As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. (Mark 2:14; NIV)

The Gospels repeatedly report on these vocations.1

This sentence: “Follow me!” was not simply an invitation to become a student of Jesus. If Jesus had wanted students, on the Sabbath he would have reserved seats in the front row of the synagogue for them, so that they could hear his sermon clearly. Or he would have founded a school, an academy, as had long been the custom among the Greeks in those days2. There his students would have come to him, and he would have lectured to them.

But Jesus wanted more than students. He didn’t just want to impart knowledge to them: he wanted to make disciples of them. This concept was central to his work. And so, the Greek word for disciple, μαθητής (mathetés), occurs a full 281 times in the New Testament. The entire ministry of Jesus was based on the idea of discipleship. Yet Jesus did not invent the concept of discipleship himself. It was quite common in his time. Already in the fifth century before Jesus, the Greek historian Herodotus described the relationship of disciples to their masters.3

So, Jesus wanted more than students; he wanted followers, disciples.

1.2 Being a disciple costs

Let’s take a closer look at the difference between a disciple and a student. We see it in Simon, Andrew, Levi, and all the others Jesus had called: they did not meet with Jesus for three hours a day to listen to his teachings. No, they left everything and followed Jesus wherever he went.

The disciples had to let go of their own plans. To follow Jesus, they left behind their whole lives: everything they had worked for, their businesses, their families. So, becoming a disciple was a very radical step at that time.

Why? It has to do with how a disciple was trained. Jesus taught his followers by sharing his whole life with them. He traveled with his disciples, he ate with them, and he lived with them. 24 hours a day, the disciples learned to consciously imitate their master.

And that is exactly what a disciple wanted, for that he had left everything. He wanted to learn as much as possible from his master, and so he imitated as much as possible everything his master did.

There is a beautiful picture of how far this could go. Do you remember the story of the disciples sitting alone in the boat, and then they see Jesus approaching them on the water? Peter, the most daring of the disciples, immediately tries to do what he sees Jesus do. He steps out of the boat to go to him, and Jesus can just grab him before he sinks. For me, this is a picture of how seriously Peter took his decision to emulate Jesus as an example. To learn everything from him.

So, this is a disciple: someone whose focus, whose attention is completely on his master.

Since Jesus no longer lives as a human being on this earth, for most people becoming a disciple no longer means leaving everything behind. But it doesn’t make the challenge for us any smaller. For us, too, if we want to be disciples of Jesus, our focus, our attention must be completely on our master. Our goal in life is then to imitate Jesus as accurately as possible.

In the “Great Commission,” Jesus addresses exactly these people: His disciples. Their task is to help others to become His disciples as well.

1.3 Christian

At the beginning I said: A disciple is not what we colloquially understand by a Christian. So, let’s take a look at how the word “Christian” came to be, what the word originally meant, and how its meaning has changed over 2000 years.

While “disciple” occurs over 280 times in the New Testament, we find only three times the word Christian.4 The book of Acts tells us how the word came to be:

26 […] The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. (Acts 11:26; NIV)

So, in the beginning, there were disciples. And after people saw how much their life was shaped by Jesus, that they reflected the Christ, they called the disciples Christians.

At that time, a Christian was still the same as a disciple. But is that still the case today?

In the mainstream churches, a Christian is someone who was (usually) baptized as a baby. The Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM), for example, states: “Christians today are called all people who are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.”5

In our free churches, being a Christian requires a one-time decision for Jesus and baptism. And that is good and right. Jesus himself says that we should baptize. He even had himself baptized. But when we say, “A Christian is someone who is baptized,” we have a completely different understanding of the word “Christian” than the people in the New Testament.6

Author Justin Gravitt clarifies the problem:7

[The word “Christian” is] now a term of belief more than behavior. It no longer indicates someone who looks and acts like Jesus, but is more commonly used of someone who has intellectually accepted the tenets of Christianity. Instead of being recognized by their actions, today’s Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus as their personal Savior and who identifies with the Christian religion.

What does all this mean for our understanding of the “Great Commission”?

Obviously, it was not Jesus’ goal for his disciples to get others to “pray the sinner’s prayer,” as churches call it. He wants us to be disciples ourselves, Christians in the original sense. And then we should help people on the way to becoming disciples of Christ themselves.

In the next post, we will look at how Jesus imagines this exactly.

By then. Be blessed!

Nowadays, baptism often comes first, and then the young Christian learns more or less by chance the basics of faith and life. That was different at the time of the first Christian communities. There used to be the so-called catechumenate. It was a time of education before someone would be baptized. It was not only about knowledge but also a practical life. Older Christians observed closely the lifestyle of baptism candidates during this time. Only after this training period, which sometimes lasted several years, the applicants were allowed to be baptized and participate in the Lord’s Supper. (Translated by me. See Eber2002, esp.

(Siehe Eber2002, v.a. ↩
